Gem options in Pantone Colours

Estimate Reading Time: 2 min

An eclectic selection of diamonds, pearls and coloured gemstones that fall under Pantone Color Institute’s colours for 2021 – Ultimate Gray and Illuminating – is set to dazzle the jewellery world over the coming months.

According to Pantone, the two colours create an aspirational pairing, combining deeper feelings of contemplation with a brighter perspective. It described Illuminating as a cheerful yellow, sparkling with vivacity while Ultimate Gray epitomises solid and dependable elements, which provide a firm foundation.

In the jewellery universe, a rich palette of gems best represents these two colours as symbols of hope, strength and optimism.

Gemstones that match Illuminating are yellow diamond, yellow sapphire, citrine, golden beryl, yellow topaz and fire opal, among others. These stones – diamond, moonstone, agate, Tahitian pearl, labradorite and chalcedony, to name a few – meanwhile come in vivid grey variants.

Just as the fashion world takes notice of Pantone’s colours of the year, so does the jewellery industry. Jewellery designers are expected to take cues from this year’s colours of the year and incorporate such elements to their upcoming collections.

Laurie Pressman, vice president of the Pantone Color Institute, said society is increasingly recognising colour as a critical form of communication, and a way to symbolise thoughts and ideas. As such, many designers and brands are embracing this language of colour to engage and connect.

Pantone’s choice of two independent colours for 2021 is predicated on a very challenging 2020. According to Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, the union of “an enduring Ultimate Gray with the vibrant yellow Illuminating expresses a message of positivity supported by fortitude.”
