A study released in early 2021 by US-based consumer and trade market research firm MVI Marketing LLC showed that more than 93 per cent of American consumers “love” or “like” the so-called Big Three – ruby, sapphire and emerald. The Fall 2020 Comprehensive Consumer and Trade Colored Gemstone Market Research Study underscored their invigorating allure as the gemstones of choice among stylish and sophisticated consumers.
“Precious colour is once again a clear winner for the consumer seeking fresh looks in fine jewellery styles and for the trade trying to capture the imagination of self-purchasing females and next-gen jewellery buyers,” Marty Hurwitz, CEO of MVI Marketing LLC, commented.
According to Hurwitz, coloured gemstones are also gaining favour in the wedding category, with more and more consumers going for coloured gemstone bridal jewellery pieces.
The study surveyed more than 1,100 consumers who had purchased fine jewellery in the last two years. It also included trade interviews.
In a previous interview, International Colored Gemstone Association President Clement Sabbagh said ruby, sapphire and emerald will always have a strong following in the jewellery and gemstone sector amid macroeconomic challenges as these gems are sought after for their exceptionality and value.
China meanwhile is rising in prominence as a major coloured gemstone buyer. A study by coloured gemstone specialist Gemfields in July 2020 showed that rubies and emeralds are highly favoured by Chinese jewellery owners.
“We also discovered that Chinese jewellery owners rank clarity, carat, colour and cut in this order when it comes to selecting a gemstone, and that Chinese consumers care, overwhelmingly, more about the gemstone itself – its above characteristics and its overall character – than they do about its price,” noted Gemfields, adding that respondents also indicated interest in coloured gemstones set in contemporary jewellery designs.
